The Barbados Flame Awards was conceptualized in 2001 by chairman Michael Cummins, and was first held at the Lloyd Erskine Sandiford Centre. It has grown over the years and has out-grown that venue. It now resides at the Garfield Sobers Sporting Complex.

The awards spans the entire gamut of denominational and non-denominational churches in Barbados.
