Where have you seen a structure similar to the one pictured on the left?
If you had said in the Vatican in Rome you'll be correct. If you had said in Washington D.C you'll also be correct, but as to where this particular structure resides, it is in Heroes Square in the City of Bridgetown.
An obelisk is a tall, narrow, four-sided, tapering monument which ends in a pyramidal top. Ancient obelisks were made of a single piece of stone, a monolith; however, most modern obelisks are made of individual stones, and can even have interior spaces. The original form is Egyptian and all subsequent versions are derived from the original Egyptian pattern.
The obelisk symbolized the sun god Amon Re, and during the brief religious reformation of Akhenaten was said to be a petrified ray of the Aten, the sundisk. It was also thought that the spirit of their sun god, 'Ra', dwelt within each obelisk.(Wikipedia).
One of the main symbols of the Male principle is the obelisk. Therefore to some it represents the male sex organ.(cuttingedge.org)
This war memorial with its obelisk grey granite structure and coral stone basin was built in 1925 to commemorate those who died during World War 1. It features the Island’s Coat of Arms and the names of the Barbadians who died during the two World Wars.(funbarbados). This structure is also known by many a Barbadian as the Cenotaph.
Accompanying the Obelisk or Cenotaph in Barbados is the (8) eightfold path to enlightenment, which is constructed on the ground in this SQUARE. This symbol resembles the spokes of a wagon wheel, with the hub in the middle. Some believe that a person must take eight steps to achieve full spiritual enlightenment.
The eightfold path to enlightenment represents one of the main symbols of the Female principle, the circle, symbol of the Vulva. Therefore representing the vagina. If one was to look carefully one would also see one of these symbols within churches here in Barbados.
