Dr Lloyd Goldson, a Kingston based Obstetrician and gynaecologist consultant, will appear in the Corporate Area Resident Magistrate's Court on July 18.
The Obs-Gyn consultant allegedly performed an abortion on a pregnant 12-year-old, who is also alleged to be four months pregnant, according to the Jamaican Gleaner news online. The procedure is reported to had occurred on July 4.
Goldson and the girl's mother were under suspicion of procuring abortion by detectives from the Centre for the Investigation of Sexual Offences and Child Abuse (CISOCA).
Goldson was charged on Thursday, police said. The doctor has been released on bail of $150,000 and will appear in the Corporate Area Resident Magistrate's Court on 18 July.
Abortion is permitted in Jamaica to save the life of the woman, preserve physical and mental health.
Abortion is illegal in Jamaica under the Offences Against the Person Act of 1864, which is based on the 1861 English Act of the same title. Under the Act, any person who, intending to procure a miscarriage, regardless of whether the woman is with child, unlawfully administers to her any poison or noxious thing or unlawfully uses any instrument or other means to the same end is subject to life imprisonment, with or without hard labour.
Abortion may not be permitted on mere request, rape or incest, foetal impairment, or economic or social reasons.
Additionally, the spouse's consent is required in order to perform an abortion on the grounds of mental health, foetal impairment, rape or incest, and the approval of two specialists must be obtained.
