General Colin Powell (Ret'd), former United States Secretary of State and his wife Alma, arrived in Trinidad today to launch the Ministry of National Security's National Youth Mentorship Programme at the National Academy for the Performing Arts (NAPA) on April 11, 2011.
General Powell has been involved in such mentoring programmes for the youth, and it would be fitting to have him open and launch the National Youth Mentorship Programme (NYMP).
The general founded America's Promise - The Alliance for Youth in 1997, to help children and youth from all socioeconomic sectors in the United States. His wife Alma Powell is currently Chair of the Alliance.
Young persons who lack strong relationships with a caring adult while growing up are much more vulnerable to a host of difficulties, ranging from academic failure to involvement in serious risk behaviours. Therefore, the Ministry of National Security recognized the importance of mentoring programmes in creating positive differences in youth behaviour and development.
The mentoring programme is expected to help at risk youths in their overall development in terms of socially, emotionally, economically, and spiritually.
The National Mentorship Programme has been implemented by the Ministry of National Security in collaboration with the Ministries of Education, Science, Technology and Tertiary Education, People and Social Development and Sport and Youth Affairs.
