BRIDGETOWN, Barbados -- This small island developing state(s) (SIDS) has recently signed unto what is referred to as "SIDS DOCK". The signing was done by Minister of Foreign Affairs, Senator Maxine McClean.
SIDS are a group low-lying coastal countries that tend to share similar sustainable development challenges, such as small populations, limited resources, susceptibility to natural disasters, and fragile environments.
SIDS DOCK further refers to a "DOCKing station", to connect the energy sector in SIDS with the global market for finance, sustainable energy technologies and with the European Union (EU) and the United States (US) - (aosis.info)
SIDS DOCK will be a "company" administered by an Executive Director, with oversight from a Board of Directors that will be selected from among Alliance of Small Island States (AOSIS) Member States, development partner organizations and technical experts from the global community.
As SIDS would be responsible for sustainable development, it is expected that it will have a sustainable energy foundation by facilitating the sharing of experiences, pursuing of mutual goals, and sharing resources across regions. SIDS tend to have abundant endowments of renewable energy resources but at this time remain dependent on imported fuels.
Currently the United Nations (UN) lists 52 SIDS of which 38 are UN members.
