Kamla Persad-Bissessar Trinidad and Tobago's first female Prime Minister. Mrs. Persad-Bissessar won the May 24th 2010, General elections in a 29-12 victory against Patrick Manning, leader of the People's National Movement.
Kamla Persad-Bissessar is leader of the United National Congress, whose party for political expediancy joined forces with the Dookerand lead, Congress of The People (COP), in an effort to prevent a split in the votes of persons of Indian descent.
In a victory speech after her win Mrs. Persad-Bissessar said, "there is absolutely nothing to be afraid about following the People's Partnership's historic victory at the polls".
"Be not afraid of the people's victory. Those of you who did not find to support us, from today onwards, understand and know there is only one nation, there is only one people, so be not afraid. And for those who supported, I ask you be your brother's keeper, be your sister's keeper and no one must be left behind. Because if we leave one behind then it can happen to every one of us".
"I express my gratitude as well, to the founder and former leader the Hon. Basdeo Panday for his years of service and dedication to the cause of justice, equality and national unity. As Mr. Panday celebrates his 77 birthday today, from Rienzi Complex, we wish you a most pleasant and joyful day in the glory of the rising sun!"
Persad-Bissessar said her first order of business, starting today, would be to choose those who would be forming her Cabinet.
Mrs. Persad-Bissessar now heads five parties in a coalition goverment. The five parties are Ms. Persad-Bissessar's United National Congress, Congress of the People (COP), the National Joint Action Committee, Tobago Organisation of Peoples, and the Movement for Social Change.
Mrs. Persad-Bissessar is a politician and lawyer, was the first woman to serve as Attorney General, acting Prime Minister and Leader of the Opposition of Trinidad and Tobago.
The new prime minister mentioned at one time that she was glad that Mr. Manning had chosen the 24th dating for the election as she had triumph as the political leader of the UNC on January 24th, 2010, and then as the Opposition leader on the 24th February, 2010. Kamla Persad-Bissessar was elected Political Leader of the United National Congress, ousting the party's founder, Mr. Basdeo Panday.
