LONDON - Rebekah Brooks has been arrested, the Metropolitan Police confirmed, after going to a London police station by appointment. Brooks is the 10th person to be arrested in connection to the new investigation into allegations of phone hacking at the News of The World (NoTW).
In a statement the police said, "The MPS (Metropolitan police service) has this afternoon, Sunday 17 July, arrested a female in connection with allegations of corruption and phone hacking.
"At approximately 12:00 (BST) a 43-year-old woman was arrested by appointment at a London police station by officers from Operation Weeting (phone hacking investigation arm) together with officers from Operation Elveden (bribing of police officers investigation arm). She is currently in custody.
"She was arrested on suspicion of conspiring to intercept communications, contrary to Section1(1) Criminal Law Act 1977 and on suspicion of corruption allegations contrary to Section 1 of the Prevention of Corruption Act 1906.
Brooks was due to give evidence before MPs in two days on the culture, Media and Sport select committee on Tuesday.
Two days ago, last Friday, July 15, Brooks had resigned from the post of Chief Executive Officer (CEO) at News International. In a resignation statement Brooks had said that at News International we pride ourselves on setting the news agenda for the right reasons. Today we are leading the news or the wrong ones. She had said that her desire to remain on the bridge has made me a focal point of the debate, thus detracting attention from all our honest endeavours to fix the problems of the past.
Brooks has therefore given Rupert and James Murdoch her resignation.
A statement released on Brooks' behalf said she "voluntarily attended a London police station to assist with their ongoing investigation."
