Most believed that the GOP had a good chance at controling one, if not both Houses of Congress, which include the United States House of Representatives, and the United States Senate. 1,000 candidates were actively engaged in heated debates across the nation in the quest to control Congress in January.
Democrats are warning that if Republicans capture the House-and perhaps also the Senate-in this November's election, they would abolish cabinet departments, repeal Obamacare, and privatize social security. They might want to do these things, but they won't be able to overcome a Senate filibuster or a presidential veto. What they will be able to do, however, is undermine the work of regulatory agencies like the Environmental Protection Agency (EPA), the Occupational Safety and Health Administration (OSHA), and the Federal Communications Commission (FCC).
A Republican Congress wouldn't be able to close them down, but it could make life very difficult for them to function by cutting their funding. That's exactly what happened after the Republicans captured the Congress in November 1994 when Bill Clinton was president.
Midterm elections refer to general elections in the United States that are held two years after the elections for the President of the United States. Federal offices that are up for election during the midterms are members of the United States Congress, including all 435 seats in the United States House of Representatives, and the full terms for 33 or 34 of the 100 seats in the United States Senate.
While presidential elections are held every four years, general elections for other positions are held every two years.
